Joy Okada is a jazz vocalist, currently based in Fairfax, Virginia, playing all over the Washington D.C. area. She is also studying and pursuing a degree in jazz performance at George Mason University, while also gaining her Bachelors in Arts for English with a Concentration in Writing and Rhetoric. She is working to incorporate sounds of her Hawaiian childhood into her music and advocate for Asian American, Native Hawaiian, and Pacific Islander voices in the field of music. Okada had the privilege of being surround by jazz her whole life, as her father is a jazz pianist, but she is just beginning her journey studying music in a serious manner.

Education

Joy Okada is currently pursuing her bachelors degree in English at George Mason University, while also gaining a minor in jazz vocal performance. She is studying under the tutelage of Darden Purcell, famous jazz vocalist, record artist, educator, and program director. She had the honor of working alongside record musicians, such as Shawn Purcell, Wade Beech, and Navy Band Bassist Grant Le. Her dedication to her craft has opened many opportunities for her. Okada had the privilege of performing at JEN (Jazz Education Network) 2023 in Orlando, Florida, on the stage of the Blues Alley Club in Washington, D.C., and with the American Pop Festival Orchestra, all with the Mason Jazz Vocal Ensemble.
